flash that smile | nick @ eighteen months

black and white toddler photo
Little Kid Photo Tip #819: When you think a shoot has wrapped, give it at least one more minute. Breathe. Breathe again. Maybe start to pack up. But leave the camera on and the lens cap off. Keep that finger on the shutter ... You never know when the best smiles will come.

Awwwwwwwww. (Pretty sure no other word can describe it when Baby Kinley sleeps with a smile in Mom's arms.)

Light & Shadow | Victoria's Senior Photos

High school senior photo
Okay, so we hesitate to rave about our own work, but it's hard not to right now – we just love everything about this photo – the door, the house, the steps, the shadows, the highlights. And, above all, the girl. Classic beauty.

hand-off & hold tight | baby cam

Baby sleeping
Father and Son
As we prepared for this sweet sleeping baby photo, Eric and Ola got their little newborn all nice and tired, warm and relaxed. Two quick frames, and Cam's arms and legs popped right up. Going through the images after the shoot was done, his tiny little feet poking up ended up better than the photo with them gently tucked into Mom's hands.

You just never know. Ready, Fire, Aim...

We. Love. Baby Photos. Congrats, Victoria and Adam, proud, new parents of Baby C -- born on Aug. 29 (Ben's birthday!) and photographed today. One of the best perks about newborn photography? Being among the first outside the hospital to see the baby. Never gets old.

a month from now...

A month from today, I'll be on an airplane with this fine chap headed on another photo excursion. This time to the amazing national parks of southern and eastern Utah.

Can't wait.

Was looking through some old files for another image and came across this oldie-but-goodie maternity silhouette.

Just letting the clouds speak for themselves today.

Precious Baby J

Dear Jacob,
We are eternally grateful you joined our family. We are truly blessed to have you in our lives. We are excited to learn all about you as you grow. You will learn much from your sister Ella; including dancing, jumping, spinning, singing, monster hugs & kisses. You will learn to throw a ball & wrestle from your brother Will. We all love you & are happy you are here.
Love, Mom & Dad

P.S. Jacob you were super cool to photograph & oh-so patient. Thanks buddy! B n' B

a piece of heaven. in hermann.

Drive 52 miles southwest of Lake St. Louis and you'll stumble across the sleepy, romantic, historic town of Hermann. It's considered by many to be Missouri's most beautiful town, and it's an undeniably popular weekend hideaway. And for a lengthy list of couples, it's far more than that. Atop the bluffs, overlooking the Missouri River, you'll find the aptly named Hermann Hill B&B, Cottages and Wedding Chapel. It's a little piece of heaven. In Hermann.

If you live in the St. Louis area, you were probably witness to a massive storm that blew through a few weeks ago. It was March 4, and we remember it well. The lightning. The rain. The thunder. The flash-flooding and the hail. Not-so-perfect timing for area wedding planners who scrambled to move everything indoors to safety that evening. We heard from the friendly staff at Hermann Hill that a wedding was actually in progress at the height of the storm (yikes!)... However, by dawn, the storm had blown through (leaving, nevertheless, a remarkable impression on downtown Hermann). An impeccable setting and a breathtaking vista had drastically changed come Saturday morning, giving way to downed tree branches, scattered leaves and misty gray skies. Not exactly storybook, but far from devastating. The chapel doors still opened. Eager guests still shuffled in. The big day still went forward ...

... It's funny. As dramatic as the storm and its aftermath were, its fury and effect will soon be forgotten (if not already). But March 5 will be a day Rachel, David and their four beautiful children will remember for a long, long time to come.

And so will we.

what's in store?

Yeah, it's been 10+ years since I left Hazelwood Central behind and headed off to college, but I still remember my senior year fairly well -- four words sum it up, I think: theater, hockey, yearbook, golf... I had everything planned out for, at least, the next 3 years, and -- as luck would have it -- most of it went according to plan. Looking back, I consider myself pretty fortunate.

And now, it's Mark's turn. Have a great senior year: Get involved. Stay focused. Keep busy. As I recall, this is the last year for a lot of things, but, then again, the first for a lot of others. So, take advantage, and have fun. As for Scott and Faith's kids, well, I pretty much don't remember anything dating back earlier than age 15. So what's in store? Not sure. But make sure to drive your parents crazy as you're figuring it out...

These are just some of the shots over the weekend. More to come.

happy days are here

Ahhh... Spring-summer in St. Louis. The inevitable switching back and forth from fans, open windows and outdoor dining to air conditioning and watering the lawn five days a week that comes this time of year.

While freeing up hard drive space, we were sorting through our Lightroom catalog and came across a theme: happy guys. These photos were all shot in the fall, hence the sweaters, but that's what got me thinking about the current "season" we are in right now. Yesterday: 68 degrees. Today: 85. Tomorrow? Who knows?

Simple editing performed on these pictures: b/w conversion and a contrast increase in LR, cropped to 1x1 ratio.
